Šipun Žlahtina 2020

On island of Krk there are 250 hectares of vineyards, and indigenous white variety Žlahtina makes up 95% of this. Winemaker Ivica Dobrinčić is the biggest producer of this grape. Most of the vineyards on Krk are located inland from the medieval sea-cliff village of Vrbnik. The wild roses that mark the hills overlooking Vrbnik are locally known as Šipun. Žlahtina is known for its difficulty in accumulating sugar. Even in very hot years the alcohol of Žlahtina is modest. Grapes are hand harvested and quickly transported to the nearby winery.

Šipun Žlahtina is the most classic example of this indigenous variety. It is easy going, relaxed, the sort of wine best sipped during the worm days. Discrete and subtle, peachy and gently gardenia scented with a scent of the sea, balanced, mineral and thirst quenching with acidity low enough to make it a very desirable companion.
